Types of Chicago Burn Injuries

Burns are classified by severity, or degrees. The main categories of burn injuries include:

  • First-degree burns. This is a burn's least serious level. The damage is only to the skin's outer layer and is uncommon to permanent scarring. Sunburn is an example.

  • Second-degree burns. The outer layer of the patient (epidermis) and the layer below (dermis) are damaged. Blisters and scarring sometimes occur with second-degree burns.

  • Third-degree burns. Damage is done to the deepest skin layer, fat layer, and underlying tissue. Nerve damage is typical along with the blisters and scarring. Victims suffering Third-degree burns often have difficulty breathing and may have trouble regulating their internal body temperature if a large proportion of their body is covered by scarring.

Complications from burning include scarring, blistering, and swelling. Infection is a strong possibility since the protective barrier to the skin is damaged. Other hazards include low blood pressure that can threaten heart function, low body temperatures that can threaten hypothermia, and bone and joint harm.
